Sing Street

Public Pick: Arrival

Looking at the poll, Arrival was the clear winner as the public’s best drama of 2016 as it received over 50% of the votes.

Express Film Pick: Arrival

My pick for best drama is Arrival. Hands down on of the best films of the year, Arrival brings together the best of what cinema has to offer with a combination of brilliant acting, directing, and a beautiful screenplay. Arrival encapsulates the genre of drama and gives it its own unique meaning through the magician-like skills of Denis Villeneuve directing and creating what I believe is a modern masterpiece.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Arrival

Arrival is a thought-provoking and emotional film with twists, Amy Adams delivered a spectacular performance in this breath-taking drama, this film just amazed me, and I enjoyed every moment of it, therefore making it my favourite drama of 2016.

Best Comedy Film:

Deadpool
Hunt For The Wilderpeople
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Sausage Party

Public Pick: Deadpool

In the first few days, Hunt For The Wilderpeople was leading by a huge margin, but Deadpool managed to make a surprising comeback and is the public’s pick for best comedy film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Deadpool

Comedies are one of the most difficult types of movies to critique as not only do they have to be solid films, but also have a separate goal which is to make you laugh. The one movie that made me laugh uncontrollably this year was hands down, Deadpool. From the opening credits all the way to the post-credit scene, Deadpool is full of laughs and does not have a dull moment whatsoever. Not only was this movie hilarious, it was a great overall movie and a real surprise.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

It was tough picking a winner from this category, but I pick Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping as best comedy of 2016 as it made me laugh the most. The songs were hilarious and the jokes always made me laugh. This film made me laugh so much that I had tears in my eyes.

Best Romance Film:

Cafe Society
Love & Friendship
The Light Between Oceans
The Lobster

Public Pick: The Lobster

The unique, unusual and unconventional romance film the lobster managed to pick up 44% of the votes making it the public’s pick for best romance of 2016.

Express Film Pick: The Lobster

Romance films can sometimes be the most cliched filled stories ever told. There are countless iterations of different classic stories and teen dramas out there, so my pick for the best romance film is quite different, The Lobster. Such an original story mixed with great acting and cinematography. Great love story and a really nice film if you’re into very strange films.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: The Lobster

The Lobster is not your typical romance film, it’s unique, creative & funny, it’s strange but it’s a good type of strange and I liked it, making it my favourite romance movie of 2016.

The magnificent seven

The Magnificent Seven

The Nice Guys won the public vote by a huge margin, it received 70% of the votes, with The Magnificent Seven taking second place with just 16% of the votes.

Express Film Pick: The Magnificent Seven

Although I do not think The Magnificent Seven is the best film from the ones nominated, in my opinion, it is the best action movie of the year. This film has a kickass cast and they came to play. Antoine Fuqua directed this movie with such grit and awesome action sequences that left me speechless and wanting more.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: The Nice Guys

The Nice Guys, for me was the best non-superhero action film this year, the chemistry between Gosling & Crowe was fantastic, the humour was there and the film was just a fun ride from beginning to end.

The Edge Of Seventeen

The Edge Of Seventeen

Best Coming Of Age Film:

American Honey
Everybody Wants Some!!
Sing Street
The Edge Of Seventeen

Public Pick: Sing Street

In the early days of this poll, it was very tight with Sing Street leading by a small margin. However once the polls closed Sing Street received half of the votes making it the public’s pick for best coming of age film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Sing Street

For such a small film with almost zero known actors, Sing Street proved to be one of the best movies of the year. To me, this film is an amazing coming of age tale of a kid who just wants to play music and find love. You really see who the all the characters develop, especially the main character, and it is beautiful and you fall in love with the story right away.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: The Edge Of Seventeen

I loved Sing Street, but in terms of Coming of Age films I think Edge Of Seventeen was the best, Hailee Steinfeld gave a great performance, we can see how her character slowly changes and comes of age. The comedy and drama in this film really blended well together and I was surprised with how good this film was.

Best Animated Film:

Kubo And The Two Strings
Moana
Sausage Party
Zootopia

Public Pick: Zootopia

It was tight between Zootopia and Kubo And The Two Strings, both fought hard to beat one another while Moana and Sausage Party were left behind. But it is Zootopia who comes out on top with 49% of the votes and Kubo And The Two Strings takes second place with 35% of the votes. Which makes Zootopia the public’s pick for best animated film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Kubo And The Two Strings

In a year jam-packed with solid animated movies from Disney, Pixar, and Seth Rogen, what I thought was the best animated film of the year was Kubo and the Two Strings. Coming from Laika, a studio known for its stop-motion animation, Kubo combines beautiful storytelling with beautiful animation. It has an epic feel to it and took me through an awesome adventure with its characters ending with a heartwarming finish

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Zootopia

I am a big fan of animated films, I just love them, this year had some very good animated films & it was very hard to pick a winner. But for me I think Zootopia takes it, I like the message it had and even with trying to get its message across it was still an enjoyable animated film for all ages.

Snowden
Sully

Public Pick: Eddie The Eagle

It was very close between Eddie The Eagle and Sully, at first Sully was leading by a small percentage, but eventually Eddie The Eagle took the lead and ended up winning the public’s vote for best biography of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Sully

Clint Eastwood recently has been very hit or miss for many people, but this year he hit a home run with Sully. It was amazing to see how such a traumatic event like the miracle on the Hudson played out and truly affected Sully in the days following and what he had to go through. This was made easy by both Eastwood and Tom Hanks playing their respective parts directing and acting.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Sully

Sully, for me was the best biography of the year, it was well edited & had me engaged throughout. I liked how the story was told and found myself enjoying the film more than I thought I would.

Best Comic Book Adaption Film:

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Captain America: Civil War
Deadpool
Doctor Strange

Public Pick: Deadpool

Deadpool winning the public vote was a huge surprise as Captain America: Civil War had a huge lead for majority of the time, but Deadpool managed to make an unexpected comeback making it the public pick for best comic book adaption film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Captain America: Civil War

Hands down the best comic-book movie of the year was Captian America: Civil War. Although other comic-book movies did surprise me more, Civil War was able to take what we love about Marvel movies and completely increase the stakes by a thousand. With a movie so jammed with characters, it was impeccable how they managed to handle them all perfectly while still having it be a Captain America movie. Everything in the movie worked and all I got to say is that airport scene!

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Deadpool

It was a tough choice between Captain America: Civil War & Deadpool but I think deadpool just comes out on top, due to it being unique compared to other comic book films, Deadpool took a risk and it worked. The Humour & action blended well together, I think Captain America: Civil war was great but safe.

Best Horror Film:

Don’t Breathe won by a huge margin in the public polls, making it undoubtedly the best horror film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Nocturnal Animals

From all the nominees, this was the last one I saw, but ended up being my favorite! This film was so intense and made me tense up multiple times. The acting was a big contributor to that from Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, and especially Aaron Taylor-Johnson who totally creeped me out. This was a really good film and a fantastic thriller.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Green Room

Green Room is a smart movie which delivers violent and dark thrills, the concept was good and the execution was even better. The movie is filled with tense, unpredictable and at times even shocking moments, hence making it my favourite thriller of the year.

All the acting was incredible and the story itself was something so different, and it totally left me with my jaw dropped, I loved everything about this movie.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Arrival

My pick for best Sci-Fi is Arrival, it’s one of those clever, unpredictable sci-fi movies which I love, it asks many questions about what would happened if aliens actually landed on our planet. It’s a sci-fi that relies on its clever story rather than CGI fuelled scenes or action scenes.

The Handmaiden

The Handmaiden

Best Foreign Language Film:

Divines
Train To Busan
The Handmaiden
The Wailing

Public Pick: Train To Busan

As soon as the poll for best foreign language film opened, Train To Busan has been leading, with The Handmaiden close behind. Therefore Train To Busan wins the public vote making it the public’s pick for best foreign language film of 2016.

Express Film Pick: Train To Busan

Combining action, cinematography, and great characters, Train to Busan is an incredibly fun movie. With a premise that seems unoriginal, it is able to do so much and really capture what a zombie outbreak would do to people. It was intense and made me care about its characters every step of the way.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: The Handmaiden

It was tough to pick between Divines & The Handmaiden but the handmaiden just came out on top for me. It’s a work of art, an amazing movie, the writing, the storytelling, the twists & the characters made this such a great film. Even with a long runtime never was I bored while watching The Handmaiden.

It was very close between Star Trek Beyond and Finding Dory, but Star Trek Beyond received majority of the votes making it the public’s pick for best sequel of 2016

Express Film Pick: Star Trek Beyond

The third in the new Star Trek series, this film did something the other two did not and really captured the feel of old Star Trek. While the other two were not loved by many Trek fans, this movie grabbed the hearts of many fans and delivered and a sequel better than the last.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Finding Dory

There have been many sequels this year and many have just been either terrible or tolerable, I think for me the sequel that stands out the most is Finding Dory, I wasn’t too excited about it when it was announced but it turned out to be good & enjoyable animated film.

Express Film Pick: Doctor Strange

This movie took a giant leap in terms of visual effects. From now on, no big major motion picture should be hindered by special effects or CGI because Doctor Strange has set the bar for what great special effects should be. This film is visually breathtaking due to its insane special effects and weird angles and dimensions. This film took my breath away with its visuals.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: The Neon Demon

The Neon Demon Visually was just beautiful, the colours, the costumes & the style just made everything pleasing to the eye.  Due to it being so visually stunning it made the film better and slightly overshadowed its flaws, also I thought the score was amazing.

Zootopia

Public Pick: Arrival

Arrival wins another poll and is the public’s pick for best movie with a message for 2016 and received 44% of the votes.

Express Film Pick: Arrival

One of the greatest things about Arrival is its story and the message it tells. This message is the real crutch of the movie and makes it what it is. Through the directing and acting, this message is conveyed beautifully and really makes you think once the film ends and to me those are the best types of movies.

Popcorn On Couch Pick: Zootopia

I loved Arrival, but in terms of this category I think zootopia is the best, I like the message & story it tells about stereotyping and racism, which are big problems in society today. Its message also blends in nicely with the story & it’s still an enjoyable family film.

Express Film Pick: Swiss Army Man

When you hear about a movie or see a trailer, you don’t typically expect to see a farting dead corpse being at the center of it. Well, Swiss Army Man is about that and its relationship with another man, and boy does this film surprise! I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed this film for its different and crazy story, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Express Film Pick: Warcraft

Many of the films that were nominated for this category were bad, but the one that stands out to me is WarCraft. The main reason is because I am familiar with the lore of the movie, and it was enjoyable to see things from the game come to life and see this story play out. Granted it is not a good movie and I see why it got such poor reviews, but to me it is fun and enjoyable and for sure a guilty pleasure.
