Z for Zachariah (2015)

Drama Romance

After a nuclear disaster wipes out most the population, Ann (Margot Robbie) believes she is the last person on earth. But to her surprise she meets two other men, all three survivors bond and Ann finds herself in an unexpected post-apocalyptic love triangle with the two other survivors.

Z For Zachariah is a beautiful drama about post-apocalyptic life focusing on only three characters. The movie is adapted from a book with the same title, however the film doesn’t stay true to the book and it actually adds an extra character, Caleb (Chris Pine).

We see Ann living her normal but lonely life in the post-apocalyptic world as the last woman on earth, we watch her grow beans, pray, hunt, just doing usual things to survive. But her life changes when she discovers another human is alive, John Loomis (Chiwetel Ejiofor). This is when the movie really starts to get interesting; Ann and John get to know each other more, through their deep and captivating conversations we get to learn more about their past and personalities. Despite their big age gap, their different religious views and different personalities Ann and John start to fall in love with each other.

However their peaceful life completely changes when Ann discovers another Human, the mysterious and shifty Caleb, we don’t know what his true intentions are and we are unsure whether he is good or bad. Regardless he disrupts the peace and starts to cause tension.

Z For Zachariah is a beautiful, captivating and interesting film shot in a stunning location. This location was used to the filmmaker’s advantage and the film was filled with breath-taking cinematography. The pacing of the movie was very slow although it didn’t bother me as I was taken away by the dialogue, characters and scenery, but the pace may discourage some viewers. The acting was superb from all three actors, especially from Margot Robbie who showed potential and talent throughout the film.

Z For Zachariah is a good movie with an even better ending that will get people talking, if you like slow-paced dramas or romances with amazing cinematography, definitely watch this movie.
